Northern Journal: In Anchorage, a coal-inspired startup could help pave the path to wind and solar

In August 2023, Cache Energy was preparing to participate in Launch Alaska’s 2023-2024 Tech Deployment Track program. A year later, Cache had successfully graduated from the program and deployed its first pilot project in Anchorage.

Cache’s innovative long duration energy storage system uses tiny pellets made from limestone to capture excess wind and solar power and save it until it’s needed. After the system was shipped to Anchorage and set up at Halliburton this summer, more than 200 businesspeople, elected officials and other Alaskans toured the site in August. Up next: Cache aims to install 10 of the systems in Alaska communities by the end of 2025.

Northern Journal reporter Nathaniel Herz visited the Anchorage installation, and wrote about how Cache’s technology could help Alaska transition to generating more solar and wind power ahead of an impeding natural gas shortage.
